Bon, comme vous le saviez, on attendait notre vol prévu pour le 5 avril. 2 longues semaines à attendre, mais comme tout était calme au Mexique, rien ne nous stressait... enfin un peu quand même... mais mis à part l’absence de touristes repartis de leur semaine de relâche, tout nous apparaissait encore normal il y a 2 jours.

Le 21 mars au matin, je lis le journal de la région. Le 20 mars, il est écrit qu’un premier cas de coronavirus a été recensé à Playa delCarmen. Oh... ça commence ... même si aucune mesure sanitaire n’est prise au Mexique, sauf l’arrêt des classes ... 

Luc regarde internet, il trouve un article (qui datait du 19 mars) qui nous fait fléchir.

C’est ça qui nous fait dire que le gouvernement mexicain n’était vraiment pas prêt pour affronter le coronavirus. 

Ok, trêve de tergiversations, on cherche notre vol (prévu pour le 5 avril) sur internet... vol qu’on ne retrouve même plus sur le site officiel, Interjet a mis en veilleuse tous ses vols d’avril (mais ne nous a jamais avisé ...). 

On avait lu que Sunwing offrait des sièges pour ceux dans le besoin d’être rapatriés, mais impossible de réserver sur internet. Qu’une seule compagnie offre le vol Cancún-Montréal: American Airlines. Va pour cette compagnie (pas le choix), le 22 mars à midi 05, on partira vers Montréal, avec une escale pour Chicago.

C’est en lisant ceci que j’ai craint que American Airlines fasse de même avec nous, et nous renvoient au Mexique! Bon, je commence à prier...

Une fois à l’aéroport, Luc a l’éclair de génie d’aller demander au comptoir de Sunwing ... ils ont 2 vols ce jour même, vol direct pour le Québec.  Bingo ! Et ils peuvent nous prendre, gratos. Tant pis pour notre vol avec American Airlines.

C’est ainsi que revenus plusieurs jours plus tôt que prévu, nous sommes maintenant au Canada. Le temps d’aller chercher mon véhicule (encore merci Carole et Laurent), on file vers Chambly où nous sommes accueillis. Merci de tout cœur à Anthony. 

Reste maintenant la quarantaine qu’on doit et va respecter. 

Alors donc, tout est ok pour nous, nous sommes rentrés. À 2 étages de ma soeur... que je ne peux pas voir. Mais tout est ok, Ça va bien aller. 

Que tout se passe bien pour chacun de nous. 

 Well, as you knew, we were waiting for our flight scheduled for April 5.  2 long weeks to wait, but since everything was calm in Mexico, nothing was stressing us ... well a bit anyway ... but apart the absence of tourists who finished their springbreak, everything seemed normal to us 2 days ago.

 In the morning of March 21, I read the regional newspaper.  On March 20, it is written that a first case of coronavirus was recorded in Playa delCarmen.  Oh ... it starts ... even if no sanitary measures are taken in Mexico, except the discontinuation of classes ...

 Luc looks at the internet, he finds an article (which dated March 19) that makes us falter.

 This is what makes us say that the Mexican government was really not ready to face the coronavirus.

 Ok, no more waiting, we are looking for our flight (scheduled for April 5) on the internet ... flight that can not even be found on the official site, Interjet has put all its April flights on hold (but never advised us ...).

 We had read that Sunwing offered seats for those in need of repatriation, but it was impossible to book online.  Only one company offers the Cancún-Montreal flight: American Airlines.  Let’s go for this company (no choice), on March 22 at noon 05, we will leave for Montreal, with a stopover for Chicago.

 It was while reading this that I feared that American Airlines would do the same with us, and send us back to Mexico!  Okay, I'm starting to pray ...

 Once at the airport, Luc has the flash of genius to go and ask at the Sunwing counter ... they have 2 flights that day, direct to Quebec.  Bingo!  And they can take us, for free.  Too bad for our flight with American Airlines.

 So back several days earlier than expected, we are now in Canada.  Time to get my vehicle (thanks again Carole and Laurent), we drove to Chambly where we are welcomed. Huge thanks to Anthony.

 Now remains the quarantine that we must and will respect.

 So now, we are safe in Québec. At 2 levels of my sister which I can’t see. But that’s ok, everything will be ok.

Coronavirus

Un petit mot pour vous informer qu’ici à Playa del Carmen, tout va bien. 

Il y a bien quelques cas de covid-19 au Mexique, dont 4 à Cancún, mais je pense qu’il n’y a rien encore ici en ville. Ainsi, à part les classes suspendues, tout reste pareil, les commerces ne sont pas (pas encore) pillés, et même les bars et restaurants fonctionnent toujours pour le moment. Nous, on reste tranquilles dans notre petit studio, on sort peu. Sinon, pour les courses et se dégourdir. 

Notre vol de retour à Dorval est prévu le 31 mars, arrivée vers 22h. 

Vu que notre assurance voyage nous confirme qu'on est couvert, car notre voyage a été acheté avant le 13 mars, on ne change pas nos plans. Tant que les gouvernements canadien et québécois ne nous obligent pas à revenir, on attend notre retour, ici au chaud.

Évidemment quand on rentrera, on devra se mettre en quarantaine. 

Si il y a des changements et que par malheur, on ne puisse plus être accueillis au Canada ou qu’il n’y a plus de vol (ce qui serait surprenant), on attendra d’ici. Et on se cherchera un autre vol pour plus tard.

Ne vous inquiétez pas, même si j’ai de petits moment d’anxiété, je ne veux pas y donner trop de place. On ne prend pas ça à la légère. Je lis tout ce qui se dit sur le sujet, mais on reste rationnels. 

Je souhaite que vous soyez tous en grande forme, avec de bons anticorps pour contrer ce virus qui nous touchera sans doute presque tous, si ce n’est déjà fait. Mais on n’est pas pressés, protégeons-nous et protégeons les autres en gardant nos distances. Les hôpitaux en ont déjà assez sur les bras !

** Changements de dernière minute... Interjet vient tout juste de nous imposer le retard de notre vol de retour Cancun-Montréal au 5 avril, plutôt qu'au 31 mars. De prime abord, on accepte. Mais, on va s'informer pour savoir qui va payer nos 5 jours « obligatoires » au Mexique.

A quick note to inform you that here in Playa del Carmen, everything is fine.

 There are a few cases of covid-19 in Mexico, 4 in Cancun, but I don't think there is anything here in town yet.  So, apart the suspended classes, everything remains the same, the shops are not (not yet) looted, and even the bars and restaurants are still operating for the moment.  In our side, we stay quiet in our small studio, we go out little.  Otherwise, for shopping and stretching.

 Our return flight to Dorval is scheduled for March 31, arriving around 10 p.m.

 Since our travel insurance confirms that we are covered, because our trip was purchased before March 13, we do not change our plans.  As long as the Canadian and Quebec governments do not force us to return, we will wait here.

 Obviously when back, we will have to quarantine. And that is fine.

 If there are changes and unfortunately we can no longer be welcomed to Canada or there is no more flight (which would be surprising), we will wait here.  And we'll look for another flight for later.

 Don't worry, even if I have small moments of anxiety, I don't want to give it too much space.  We don't take this lightly.  I read everything that is said on the subject, but we remain rational.

 I hope that you are all in great shape, with good antibodies to counter this virus which will probably affect almost all of us, if it is not already done.  But we are in no rush, protect yourself and protect others by keeping distance.  Hospitals already have enough on their hands!

*** Last minute info: Interjet has just forced us to delay our return flight from Cancun to Montreal by April 5, rather than March 31.  At first glance, we accept.  But, we will find out who will pay for our 5 “compulsory” days in Mexico. Stay tune...

Le 31 mars...

Plus que deux semaines avant un autre départ vers chez-nous. Chez-moi, quel drôle d’expression. Car il faut un chez-nous ça l’air. Pour avoir des repères, pour se sentir enraciné. 

En cet ère de coronavirus, ça vaut la peine d’y réfléchir... si je devais absolument être en quarantaine, pour longtemps disons... j’aime beaucoup Playa del Carmen, je m’y sens à ma place, un 2e chez-moi. Mais je dois l’avouer franchement, mon 1er reste encore le Québec. Près de ma soeur, près de mon cœur. Car oui, j’ai le Québec à cœur. J’aime mon pays pour tout ce qu’il est (bon d’accord, j’éliminerais bien quelques crapets, mais ça l’air que je n’en ai pas le droit). 

Alors dans 2 semaines, je rentre chez-moi, au Québec, avec mon amour. 

On devra se mettre en quarantaine. Le gouvernement le demande. On s’y pliera. Mais entre vous et moi, le Mexique est l’un des pays le moins touché pour le moment, alors je ferai la quarantaine pas parce que je suis dangereuse mais surtout parce que je suis à risque d’être contaminée par les autres!

Only two weeks before another departure to our home.  Home, what a funny expression.  Because it is said that we need a home.  To have bearings, to feel grounded.

 In this era of coronavirus, it's worth thinking about it ... if I absolutely had to be in quarantine, for a long time let's say ... I really like Playa del Carmen, I feel in my place, a 2nd  home.  But I must admit it frankly, my 1st is still Quebec.  Close to my sister, close to my heart.  Because yes, I have Quebec at heart.  I love my country for all that it is (okay, I would eliminate a few morons, but it seems that I am not allowed to).

 So in 2 weeks, I'm going home, to Quebec, with my love.

 We will have to quarantine.  The government is asking for it.  We will comply.  But between you and me, Mexico is one of the least affected countries at the moment, so I will be in my quarantine not because I am dangerous but especially because I am at risk of being contaminated by others!
